Key West, Florida Keys — Native-born Key West residents proudly call themselves conchs, a nickname inspired by the sturdy sea mollusk that inhabits area waters of the Florida Keys. A celebration of their conch heritage is set for 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 5.
The inaugural ConchFest, a family-friendly free-admission event presented by The Rotary Club of Key West, is scheduled at Bayview Park, located on Truman Avenue at the entrance to the island city’s historic Old Town.

Hosted by Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla and the City of Tampa, the annual festival celebrates the legend of Jose Gaspar(Gasparilla), a Spanish pirate. The invasion begins Gasparilla and his krewes arrives on the 165′ Jose Gaspar, in Tampa Bay and land near downtown Tampa. The mayor then lends the key of the city to the pirate captain and a parade begins down Bayshore Boulevard The krewes throw beads, coins and other items while shooting blank pistols from the floats.
