There was a time when our state tourism motto was something like “Florida, the rules are different here.” And no time is that more obvious than on New Years Eve, instead of a big ball dropping at midnight we drop an orange in Orlando, a beach ball in Panama City Beach and, get this, a Conch shell in Key West. We’re also more likely to toast the New Year with some frozen or fruity concoction than champagne, you can call us different if you will but you have to call us fun. Our festivities range from kid friendly and family to somethings that are a little wilder, here are some suggestions of places to go and things to do in Florida for New Year’s Eve 2011.

With theme parks going all out, festive light displays and boat parades, Santa’s workshops and family fun, Florida is the place to be during the holiday season.
Floridians also decorate everything in sight, from the flamingos in our front yards to the boats at our docks everything is strung with lights and tinsel. From St. Augustine to the Florida Keys, Florida knows how to celebrate the Christmas season.

Florida is a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water, our weather is warm and sunny so it only makes sense that we enjoy our boats all year round and Christmas is no different. When were done decking our halls we head straight out to our docks and deck our decks, hulls and string those masts with lights. Once they are twinkling from bow to stern we wait for Santa. But before he gets here we take our boats and show them off, boats parades take place all over Florida and are a great way for the whole family to get into the holiday spirit. ‘Guten Tag!’ That’s German for ‘hello,’ and this is the time of year when everyone becomes a little German; we polish up our steins and practice our German accents because its Oktoberfest time. Oktoberfest started as a celebration of the marriage of the German Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese and has subsequently become the largest people’s fair in the world. Folks from all over head to Germany this time of year to enjoy the food and the festivities, not to mention the beer. Here in Florida we love a good party too, and when you add some beer and a cute little barmaid, we’re there.

Spooky, FL – The wind picks up and starts to howl, cool air settles over the land, summer is definitely over. You shiver, but is it from the cold or is it because you realize Halloween is near? In Florida, from Pensacola to Key West, we are putting out our pumpkins, stuffing our ‘scaregulls’ and getting ready to party. We have many choices when it comes to celebrating Halloween. There are local haunted houses, boo at the zoo events and, of course, our theme parks will be holding there annual events like Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween for the little ones and Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, which is definitely not for the little ones. Christmas in Florida is so different from what the rest of the country is used to, forget the fact that we almost never have snow, it doesn’t even get really cold here so we celebrate in other ways.
