Key West Historic Marker Tour Spotlights Colorful Island History

Key West, Florida Keys – Contemporary visitors can discover and experience the multifaceted history of Key West via the Key West Historic Marker Tour recently debuted by a local historian. Historic sites can be explored individually through free cell-phone tours or downloads from www.keywesthistoricmarkertour.org.

The tours include sites and properties bearing Key West Historic Marker plaques that highlight their place in island history. The sites were selected based on historian Bruce Neff’s expert research into their significance.

Located just 90 miles from Cuba, Key West was the site of a flourishing cigar industry in the mid to late 1800s, when the island city welcomed thousands of Cuban immigrants seeking greater personal and political freedom. The conga line and associated events recognize the vibrant culture and customs those people brought with them to Key West.

Showcasing the republic’s eccentric spirit, the 29th annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration commemorates the Florida Keys’ secession from the United States following a 1982 U.S. Border Patrol blockade that virtually stopped traffic on the only road to the mainland.

Celebrate Key West’s Conch Heritage at Conchfest March 5

Conch ShellKey West, Florida Keys — Native-born Key West residents proudly call themselves conchs, a nickname inspired by the sturdy sea mollusk that inhabits area waters of the Florida Keys. A celebration of their conch heritage is set for 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 5.

The inaugural ConchFest, a family-friendly free-admission event presented by The Rotary Club of Key West, is scheduled at Bayview Park, located on Truman Avenue at the entrance to the island city’s historic Old Town.
