Born more than 30 years ago, the festival is internationally recognized for its uninhibited flair and lighthearted spirit.

Marathon, Florida Keys — The much-anticipated opening of the Florida Keys stone crab season takes place Oct. 15 each year, but the 2011-12 season opening is going to be followed by a tasty test of crab-consuming capacity. The inaugural Stone Crab Eating Contest, a challenge for amateur eaters, is set for Saturday, Oct. 22 in Marathon.

Spooky, FL – The wind picks up and starts to howl, cool air settles over the land, summer is definitely over. You shiver, but is it from the cold or is it because you realize Halloween is near? In Florida, from Pensacola to Key West, we are putting out our pumpkins, stuffing our ‘scaregulls’ and getting ready to party. We have many choices when it comes to celebrating Halloween. There are local haunted houses, boo at the zoo events and, of course, our theme parks will be holding there annual events like Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween for the little ones and Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, which is definitely not for the little ones. Marathon, Florida Keys – Spotlighting native wildlife, the 13th annual Florida Keys Birding and Wildlife Festival is set for Wednesday through Sunday, Sept. 21-25, to capture the focus of nature enthusiasts and offer tips for becoming better birders and nature photographers. Staged at the oceanfront preserve of Curry Hammock State Park, mile marker (MM) 56.2 near Marathon, the family- and photography-friendly event includes field trips and guided interpretive nature walks at sites throughout the Florida Keys.

The event salutes the start of the Florida Keys lobster season, which runs from Aug. 6, 2011, through March 31, 2012.

Key West, Florida Keys — The life of “Captain Tony” Tarracino, a legendary former Key West bar owner and one-time island mayor, is to be celebrated Aug. 11-14 with a lighthearted festival. The inaugural Captain Tony Days events follow an Aug. 10 “birthday party” for the late captain, who died in 2008 at age 92. The party is to begin at 6 p.m. at Captain Tony’s Saloon, 428 Greene St., which was owned by Tarracino for almost 30 years.

Hemingway Days 2011 includes a popular look-alike contest, a book debut and authors’ readings, an offbeat “Running of the Bulls,” a marlin tournament and the culmination of a short story contest directed by author and Hemingway granddaughter Lorian Hemingway.

Historic sites can be explored individually through free cell-phone tours or downloads from www.keywesthistoricmarkertour.org.
The tours include sites and properties bearing Key West Historic Marker plaques that highlight their place in island history. The sites were selected based on historian Bruce Neff’s expert research into their significance.
