Break out the beads and pick a mask that best suites you because Mardi Gras, which is one of Florida’s top events too, is upon us once again this year. Before we bow our heads for repentance and prayer during Lent and Easter, let’s raise our hands for a little fun and frivolity because we are assured that there is a time and a season for every purpose under heaven, even a time to party. There was a time when our state tourism motto was something like “Florida, the rules are different here.” And no time is that more obvious than on New Years Eve, instead of a big ball dropping at midnight we drop an orange in Orlando, a beach ball in Panama City Beach and, get this, a Conch shell in Key West. We’re also more likely to toast the New Year with some frozen or fruity concoction than champagne, you can call us different if you will but you have to call us fun. Our festivities range from kid friendly and family to somethings that are a little wilder, here are some suggestions of places to go and things to do in Florida for New Year’s Eve 2011.

Floridians also decorate everything in sight, from the flamingos in our front yards to the boats at our docks everything is strung with lights and tinsel. From St. Augustine to the Florida Keys, Florida knows how to celebrate the Christmas season.

Florida is a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water, our weather is warm and sunny so it only makes sense that we enjoy our boats all year round and Christmas is no different. But before he gets here we take our boats and show them off, boats parades take place all over Florida and are a great way for the whole family to get into the holiday spirit. Here’s our list of upcoming boat parades, find one in your area to enjoy.

In Florida instead of a big crystal ball for New Year’s Eve like they do in New York City we drop a big orange in Orlando and a Conch Shell in Key West and we tend to toast the New Year with a fruity rum drink rather than champagne. No matter how you choose to celebrate the arrival of 2011, whether it’s kid friendly or something a little wilder, here are some suggestions of places to go and things to do in Florida for New Year’s Eve.

Jimmy Buffett sings a song about Christmas where Santa delivers your presents in a canoe, yes that’s the way Santa does it here in Florida. Floridians decorate differently too, because while we do deck our halls we also deck our decks and masts with lights. We enjoy our boats year round and once they are twinkling with lights from bow to stern and every inch in between we take them out and show them off. Christmas boats parades happen all over Florida and are a great way to get the whole family in the holiday spirit. Here is a list of upcoming boat parades, look for one in your favorite area.

City sidewalks, sandy sidewalks, dressed in palm leaves and shells. In the air there’s a feeling of salt spray….silver shells, silver shells, its Christmas time on the beaches…. Yes, that’s the way we sing it in Florida, well some of us anyway.
Down here Santa shows up in his boat and leaves our presents on our screened in back porches since most of us don’t have chimneys. When we deck our halls for Christmas, we include our boats as well with twinkling lights far up the masts and from bow to stern. After they are all decorated we show them in parades which are a great way to get the whole family in the holiday spirit. Here is a list of upcoming boat parades, look for one near you.

Thanksgiving usually means getting together with family and friends, however last year our families were traveling out of state. So we went to Clearwater and stayed at a swank hotel and celebrated Thanksgiving at a trendy restaurant. It was so much more fun than hanging with the family and watching the Lions loose that we are looking for a way to do it again. Or maybe take the whole family on a Thanksgiving vacation and save money with Thanksgiving week hotel deals available through our exclusive travel partner Hotels.com.
