It’s October and that begs the question beer and brauts anyone? What started as the celebration of the wedding of a German prince has become the largest people’s fair in the world. Of course I’m talking about Oktoberfest, which celebrates its 200th year anniversary this year. As it is in March, when everyone becomes a little Irish for St. Patty’s day, so it is in October, everyone polishes up their stein and practices their German accent. Here in Florida we are no exception, we love a good party add some beer and a cute little barmaid and we’re there. Oomph!

The historic district of St. Augustine is full of small shops, restaurants and coffee shops. Peek into doorways to find craftsmen who are knowledgeable in the trades of times past. The Spanish fort Castillo de San Marcos is a “must not miss” St. Augustine attraction. The National Park Service maintains the Fort on 20.5 acres and keeps it open every day except Christmas. Two major trolleys serve downtown St. Augustine, so getting around is easy for everyone!

Daytona Beach, FL – Bike Week 2010 is now over and done; despite the unseasonably cold and somewhat rainy weather bikers turned out in droves again this year. The Dog House, always a favorite, once again had girls dancing on their bars warming the chilly crowd and encouraging patrons to drink and enjoy. The Full moon was rocking with live music and Dirty Harry’s had their scantily beer booth girls and traditional wet t-shirt contests. Needless to say Main Street was buzzing all week long with street vendors selling leathers, bike accessories, t-shirts and anything else you can think of. The people watching was fascinating and the bikes, as always, were spectacular.

In Florida we do things a little differently for New Years Eve. Instead of a big ball dropping like they do up there in New York City, we drop a big orange in Orlando and a Conch Shell in Key West and we’re just as likely to toast the new year with a Rum Runner as champagne. No matter how you choose to celebrate the arrival of 2010, here are some suggestions of places to go and things to do in Florida for New Year’s Eve.

Thanksgiving usually means getting together with family and friends, however last year our families were traveling out of state. So we went to Clearwater and stayed at a swank hotel and celebrated Thanksgiving at a trendy restaurant. It was so much more fun than hanging with the family and watching the Lions loose that we are looking for a way to do it again. Or maybe take the whole family on a Thanksgiving vacation and save money with Thanksgiving week hotel deals available through our exclusive travel partner Hotels.com.

The tradition of Oktoberfest began when back in October of 1810 when Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen.
