New Navarre Beach Pier Opens
June 2nd, 2010Navarre Beach, FL – Construction on the new 1,545-foot fishing pier on Navarre Beach, the longest in the state, is essentially complete and a grand opening celebration has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday. Afterward, Santa Rosa County will suspend admission fees to the pier for the weekend to allow the public to walk along or fish from the new pier for free. The newest Florida pier will be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. It will normally cost $1 a day to walk on the pier, and adults will pay $7 a day to fish; weekly and annual passes are available.
The completion of the new 1,545 feet long Navarre Beach Pier is the result of five years of patience and hard work of Santa Rosa County citizens, staff and contractors. After hurricanes Ivan and Dennis destroyed the existing pier in 2004 and 2005, Santa Rosa contracted with PBS&J to begin working on this monumental project. County staff and PBS&J worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to demonstrate that the initial allocation of approximately $50,000 would not be sufficient to repair the pier. Extensive documentation to support the building of a new pier that was not only up-to-date with building codes and design standards, but storm-resistant was provided to FEMA and approved by the agency in late 2008 as an “improved project.”
