In Florida we’ll celebrate the arrival of 2009 with champagne and fireworks as in most places, but many will also mix tropical cocktails and live music to party in the New Year. Whether you choose to celebrate in Central Florida with fireworks or the Conch Shell Drop in Key West at Sloppy Joe’s, here’s a list of the more popular events.

New Year’s in Key West and the Florida Keys

New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Florida Keys traditionally feature balmy temperatures and a warm welcome for revelers fleeing colder climes. On Duval Street in Key West, thousands of people are expected to ring in the New Year by watching a gigantic manmade conch shell, the symbol of the Florida Keys, descend from the skies to the roof of Sloppy Joe’s Bar, a few blocks away from at the Bourbon St. Pub/New Orleans House complex, female impersonator Sushi will preside over the festivities perched in a super-sized red high heel suspended above the crowd. Orlando – Central Florida

Disney World New Year’s Celebration

A kaleidoscope of colors and elaborate light displays will decorate the skies on the final night of 2008 at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando. Dazzling fireworks showers, live entertainment and extended park hours throughout the Vacation Kingdom on Dec. 31 make it a popular spot to ring in the new year. Universal CityWalk New Year’s Eve Party

Universal CityWalk is the place to be on New Year’s Eve 2008. Spend the night enjoying the Doobie Brothers on the main stage and additional entertainment inside participating CityWalk venues. Guests will also enjoy a fantastic New Year’s Eve celebration with an unlimited buffet, fireworks and a champagne toast at midnight. Guests must be 21 years old to attend the event, and tickets do not include admission to Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure.

New Year’s Eve at SeaWorld

From 9 p.m. to 12:30 SeaWorld rings in the New Year Dec. 31 with a celebration featuring the music of Michael Andrew & The Atomic Big Band who will keep the crowd dancing. At the stroke of midnight, the night will shine even brighter with vibrant fireworks. (For those who rather end the year with a splash, the park’s attractions and thrill rides will remain open until midnight.) Church Street Station Giant Orange Drop

Enjoy four indoor venues and the outdoor venue that is the world famous Church Street. Featuring a huge video wall, confetti cannons, fireworks, and the Orlando tradition of the Orange Drop high above Church Street. Cocoa Beach Pier New Year’s Party

This year the party in Cocoa Beach is at the pier. Featuring four live bands like High Enery, Dugan & Michaels, Rockit Band and the John Quinlivan Band. The Pier is 800’ long and there are plenty of places to buy drinks and food. More at www.cocoabeachpier.com.

Miami New Year’s Party

West Palm Beach

The 500 block of Clematis Street is gonna go ‘back in time’ to the ’80’s, starting at 8 p.m.tribute bands rock 2008 away. Events include a Laser Light show, food, street vendors, drink specials at local clubs and at midnight ping ball’s will be dropped with the chance to win $1,000 in cash and prizes. Daytona Beach

Daytona Hotels say goodbye to 2008 in style with these premier New Year’s Eve events at local Daytona Hotels New Year’s Eve at Disney World.

The Plaza Resort & Spa is planning live music, hors d’oeuvres, and a champagne toast at midnight. The Jacksonville band Freeze Frame will be playing the best of 70’s & 80’s dance rock. They are offering a special take the Elevator Home rate to which you can add a bottle of deluxe champagne for a small additional charge.
