Florida Keys — A celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad, once lauded as the most unique railway in the world, is under way in the Florida Keys. Events are to culminate Jan. 22, 2012, exactly 100 years after the inaugural train rolled through the island chain and arrived at Key West. When the Over-Sea Railroad train made its first journey in 1912 it connected the previously isolated Florida Keys with the mainland and each other for the first time, forever changing the face of the island chain.

There was a time when our state tourism motto was something like “Florida, the rules are different here.” And no time is that more obvious than on New Years Eve, instead of a big ball dropping at midnight we drop an orange in Orlando, a beach ball in Panama City Beach and, get this, a Conch shell in Key West. We’re also more likely to toast the New Year with some frozen or fruity concoction than champagne, you can call us different if you will but you have to call us fun. Our festivities range from kid friendly and family to somethings that are a little wilder, here are some suggestions of places to go and things to do in Florida for New Year’s Eve 2011.
